Music

Intent

At West Street, in music our aim is to follow the requirements of the National Curriculum; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum and ensuring the progressive development of musical concepts, knowledge and skills following the Model Music Curriculum (version2) from the Charanga Scheme.

Each Unit of Work in the Charanga Scheme comprises the of strands of musical learning which correspond with the national curriculum for music. These include; Listening and Appraising, composing and performing.

We recognise that music is a universal language which embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Here at West Street, we want to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. Music plays such an important role in helping children to feel part of a community, and so we provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music both in class and infront of an audience. Through assemblies, concerts and and other performances children are able to express their emotions and showcase their understanding of how to perform with awareness of themselves and of others. Our music lessons enable children to develop their skills, appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

From EYFS to year 6, children are immersed in a range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments, including drums, cymbals, boom whackers and glockenspiels to name just a few! By using percussion instruments, we are able to ensure that all children, regardless of their needs or abilities, are able to access our music curriculum, be creative and make their own music.

We have also, recently been awarded the Music Mark for our school's continued work towards music education!
