Personal Development
At West Street, we firmly believe in developing the whole child and this emphasis on personal development is evident through our entire teaching and learning philosophy. We endeavor to create a calm, purposeful, supportive and interesting learning environment where we can support our children to develop all aspects of their personalities. Through a range of extra curricular clubs, activities and events, we allow our children to grow in confidence, self belief, resilience and develop a life long love for learning. We strive to provide our pupils with experiences which develop them as individuals. Below are some of the many ways we support our pupils' personal development.
School Council
Meet our amazing school councilors from year 2, year 3, year 4, year 5 and year 6!
Children in year 2 - year 6 have the opportunity to take part in the West Street School Council. At the beginning of each year, children take part in a democratic vote to decide on their class representatives - further enhancing their understanding of British Values. The successful candidates then form the West Street School Council and attend weekly meetings to discuss how to make our school even better, projects they want to pursue and other aspects they want to discuss.
Colne Junior Council
Our Year 5 and Year 6 West Street School Councilors represent our school at the Colne Junior Council. They attend termly meetings alongside representatives from other local schools including, Park Primary, Trawden and Christ Church. The children discuss issues which affect children across Colne and work on initiatives to address these. The recent litter picking campaign was a particular success and our children were commended by members of the public and the Town Council for the amazing work they did in improving the local area.
Free Extra Curricular Clubs
At West Street, we are run a wide range of extra curricular clubs which cater for a variety of different interests. These clubs run from 3.30 - 4.20. Our clubs change on a half termly basis so keep your eyes peeled on Class Dojo and our Facebook page for updates!
KS2 Choir
Being part of a choir allows children the opportunity to sing as part of a group, develop their own abilities and enjoy music! Regular practice, opportunities to perform and chances to engage with the wider community help foster a love of the arts and a way to express themselves.
Year 5/6 Football
Taking part in football enables children to enhance their teamwork, leadership and strategy whilst improving their fitness, coordination and stamina. They learn sportsmanship, compassion and communication through their love of football.
KS1 Craft Club
KS1 Craft Club allows children a chance to show their creativity. While creating a variety of crafts, children have the chance to improve their gross and fine motor skills as well as their imagination.
Year 3/4 Craft Club
Children taking part in year 3/4 craft club have the chance to use their imaginations, develop their creativity and create crafts to cherish at home.
Year 5/6 Dodgeball
Dodgeball allows children to improve their physical fitness, reflexes and strategic play. Being part of a team allows them to communicate, take on leadership and work as an effective group.
KS1 Dance
Our KS1 Dance club gives children a chance to show their creativity, express themselves and improves coordination, physical fitness and flexibility. Children are able to take part in a variety of dance genres using music and other stimuli to inspire them.
Year 3/4 Art Club
Year 3/4 Art club allows children the chance to develop their inner artist. Whether it's through the use of paint, pastels or sculpture, art club allows children the chance to express themselves in a different way.
KS1 Book Club
Loosing yourself in a good book is something we all love... KS1 Book club allows children to do this. With a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry books, not forgetting picture books, KS1 book club allows children the time and space they need to delve into unknown worlds and meet mystical creatures!
KS2 Reading Club
In KS2 Reading Club gives children a chance to have some quiet time with a really good book. Children have the chance to explore unknown planets, learn about underwater creatures and fall in love with fascinating characters.
Year 1/2 Games Club
Playing games develops strategic thinking, problem solving and communication skills. Whether it's a game of Uno, Mouse Trap or Twister, Year 1/2 games club helps children improve their resilience, teamwork and the ability to loose!

Experiences outside the classroom
Our children take part in a wide variety of experiences outside of the classroom to enhance their learning and to help the local community.
Children celebrated the 100th Birthday of Sir David Attenborough by coming school dressed as their favourite animal or as David Attenborough himself!
Classes took part in community litter picking projects!
Colne Lantern Festival
Online Safety Workshops took place in school where parents were invited to school to find out how to keep their children safe online.
Pastoral Support
Our pastoral team off a wide range of support to families. Many take place in school but we signpost families to other sources of support within the community. We strive for our school to be a friendly and supportive environment for both our pupils and their wider families. We approach our children and families in a holistic way to ensure that they progress not only academically but also socially and emotionally in a place where they feel they truly belong.
Our play therapist works with children who have experienced trauma to help them manage their feelings and emotions.
We send out monthly online safety newsletters and videos to support families keeping their children safe online.
MHST work with children who are struggling with their mental health.
