West Street Community Primary School and Nursery

Writing

Across the whole school The Power of Reading is used to teach a range of different writing genres and text types during English sessions. The Power of Reading utilises high quality texts, specifically chosen for each year group, and a range of exciting and immersive teaching techniques in order to both improve children’s enjoyment of and their ability in writing.

Children are immersed in a book, often with each child having their own copy! Throughout the unit, children respond to the  text in a variety of different ways, both verbally or in writing. This could take the form of; an information text, a setting description, a poem, a diary entry and many more. Not only does this encourage the children to write for a specific purpose, but allows the children to remain focused on the whole text. These different writing outcomes encourage children to build up their stamina in writing and to apply the knowledge they have learnt during both the English session and during grammar sessions.

Children also use 'Visual Success Criteria' to help them with their writing. This is printed at the top of their writing and allows the children to see a list of the key features which they should try to include in their writing. This also allows teachers to mark children's work by marking off the elements the child has achieved in their writing.
