West Street Community Primary School and Nursery

Mathematics/Numeracy

Our aim is to develop children into confident mathematicians who are able to use mathematics as a tool in a wide range of activities both in and out of school.  Throughout the school, the children are taught maths every day following the objectives set out in the National Curriculum.

We have recently adopted a mastery approach which uses a range of different strategies such as using equipment and diagrams to for practical representation and application. This allows children to develop a greater depth of understanding and enables them to solve more complex problems.

A high priority is given to teaching children mental strategies to calculate independently; number bonds and multiplication tables are practised regularly to improve fluency.  They partake in problem solving and reasoning activities applied to a range of contexts daily.

Maths is incorporated in cross curricular activities as often as possible to ensure children can apply their skills well.

It is great to answer a question correctly but even better when a child can explain their method!
