Phonics

Children have a daily phonics lesson. We follow Supersonic Phonic Friends which teaches the different skills through characters. Parents are invited to a phonics meeting which provides information to help you support your child at home. You can support your child at home by engaging with the weekly phonics newsletter to practise what sounds your child has been learning each week.

Reading

Reading has an enormous impact on children’s learning. For this reason, we have a huge focus on the teaching of reading. We use whole class reading sessions to improve children's understanding of reading skills using the VIPERS  structure.

Fostering a love of books and reading is of great importance. If children enjoy what they are doing, they will learn more effectively. There is scientific research that shows there is a direct link between a love of reading and better life chances.

During whole class reading sessions, children investigate new and unfamiliar vocabulary, learn how to understand what questions are actually asking and how to best answer them. We also work on reading speed and accuracy.
